Brain Injury Symptoms

If you or a loved one have been injured in a serious accident, please be aware of any brain injury symptoms. As I said in my previous blog, brain injury can occur from a direct hit (such as a head hitting a windshield in a car crash) to a non-impact injury (such as a severe whiplash). Because of the wide variety of accidents resulting in this type of injury, there are often times when a brain injury may go unnoticed. It is of dire importance that if you believe you or a loved one has suffered a brain injury, that you get help immediately. A swift diagnosis is very important in these cases.

The symptoms

Some of the most common symptoms of brain injury are often found in a person’s cognitive ability and changes in their personality.

Our cognitive abilities are our skills to reason, discern, memorize and perceive. With a brain injury, often there is a decrease in the ability to do things using the skills listed above, such as remembering items and making sound decisions. Sometimes victims of Brain Injury take more to respond to questions than they normally would have.
Some of the most relevant and visible common changes in personality are depression, irritability, and emotional outbursts.

These two symptoms (decrease in cognitive ability and change in personality) are just two of many. Depending on the accident and where the victim was injured, different parts of the brain will have been affected. For example, if you had a brain injury from a hit on the forehead, you might have problems with simple movements, whereas, a hit on the back of your head might produce hallucinations. Other areas may affect memory, or emotions. It is very important to get an accurate diagnosis in order to fully assess the extent and reach of the injury.
